  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F. Slice the baguette on a sharp diagonal into pieces roughly half an inch thick—this creates more surface area for toppings and prevents the bread from cracking when you bite into it.
  2. Brush both sides of each slice with olive oil using a pastry brush or the back of a spoon. This step matters because it helps the bread toast evenly instead of burning on the edges while staying pale in the middle.
  3. Arrange slices directly on a baking sheet in a single layer without overlapping. Bake for 7-9 minutes until the bread has turned light brown and makes a hollow sound when tapped. I pull one out and let it cool on the counter for exactly thirty seconds—if it snaps when I bend it, I know it's ready.
  4. While bread toasts, combine diced tomatoes, chopped basil, minced garlic, lemon zest, sea salt, and black pepper in a small bowl. Stir gently three times and let it sit—this allows the flavors to meld without bruising the basil leaves, which happens if you over-mix.
