Ingredients

  • 12 oz fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 2 tbsp orange zest
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp cold water

Method

  1. Combine fresh cranberries, sugar, water, and orange juice in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally and bring to a boil within 3-4 minutes, watching carefully to prevent overflow.
  2. Once boiling, add orange zest, cinnamon stick, cloves, nutmeg, and salt to your pan. The spices will release their oils immediately, filling your kitchen with an incredible thanksgiving cranberry sauce family aroma that signals holiday cooking has begun.
  3. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 12-15 minutes, stirring every few minutes to ensure even cooking. You'll notice the cranberries beginning to burst and break apart naturally, which is exactly what you want.
  4. Mix cornstarch with cold water to create a slurry, then stir it into the sauce slowly. This thickens it to the perfect consistency without making the easy cranberry sauce too gelatinous or stiff.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in butter until fully melted and incorporated throughout. Discard the cinnamon stick and whole cloves, then transfer to a serving bowl and let it cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.
